It isn’t as hard to maintain a bond of friendship by conversing through online chat apps as it is to maintain a romantic partnership. With friends, you just go with the flow but in the case of romantic relationships, the flow is often laden with obstacles. However, if you're talking to someone you really like, you want to make sure you’re giving it your best regardless of the outcome. You can’t control the conversation entirely but you can steer it in a suitable direction. By following some of the points given below you can keep a conversation going smoothly with your potential romantic companion.

  • The universality of music:

It’s very unlikely for someone not to be into music, especially in this day and age, when everyone has easy access to a variety of tracks, new and old. You can talk to your potential partner about a song you heard and liked, then share it with them. This will be an effective conversation opener and you'll also get to know whether you and your dating match have a similar taste in music.

  • Ask for suggestions:

Being confident about your likes and dislikes might make you seem attractive but it’s not necessarily the best way to keep a conversation going. Make the other person feel important by asking for their advice on an uncontroversial matter. Asking for movie and book recommendations is a great way to get started. This way you can carry your discussion forward to the next day or so, also you’re letting your partner know you took their advice seriously.

  • Share an experience:

A bit of drama gets the conversation going. Take any incident and add a bit of spice to it while sharing it with your match. There's no fun in narrating an incident exactly as it happened. As long as you aren't completely twisting the narrative you can take certain liberties just for the sake of conversation. Talk about an unexpected event at work that had an element of shock, or about some crazy stunt you pulled off with your friends. Your match will have no option left but to respond and that'll get the conversation going.

  • Expose your talents:

Instead of boasting about the things you’re good at, you can expose your talents bit by bit. If you’re good at singing or painting don’t tell your match, ‘I’m a great singer or artist’, use a more subtle method. If your match asks what you were up to over the weekend you could tell them you were busy painting or trying to cover a particular song. This will automatically prolong the conversation since your match will ask you to show them your work. And once they see your work or hear your song they’ll comment on it, taking the discussion forward.

  • Refer to the previous chat:

Your match must have shared something about themselves while conversing with you. Use any bit of information from your previous chat as an excuse to chat further. If, for instance, your match told you they were going to a high school reunion last weekend you can ask them how it went. Or if they mentioned that their pet was sick you could inquire about the pet. This will take the conversation forward and they’ll like you more when you show any interest in their lives.

  • Indirect invitation:

When you’re on your way to the hardware store you can ask your match if they need something. They’ll probably not ask for anything but might inquire why you’re going there. This will prolong the conversation and it’s also a way of connecting the cyber world with the real world. Even though you’re conversing through an online chat app, you’re indirectly giving them an invitation to connect with you in the real world.

  • Take a step forward:

When you’re sure you wish to take the relationship forward don’t waste any more time and invite your match for a date in the real world. It doesn’t have to be a romantic date right away. Pick a common interest like maybe a movie that you two haven’t seen yet, or an upcoming play or concert you’d both like to see. You can even invite your potential partner to an Art exhibition or a poetry recital. Such meet-ups will give you more to talk about which will help you explore your partner further.

The aforementioned ways, among many others, can help you keep a conversation going without turning it into a drag. But there's no point prolonging an online conversation if there isn't a timely transition from the 'online' world to the 'real' world. You need to know when to make a move and shift from online chat apps to audio/video calls, and then finally plan a physical meet-up.
